Your hand crafted item is made of one of the most abundant minerals on the planet, "Iron".
If left to its own devices, over time it will revert to an oxidised state like the crust of the earth that it is made from.
It is a relationship you enter into with the item, and if the conversation goes,"If you dont like the rust", care is needed.
Wash with warm soapy water and scrub with a scourer. Then coat item in vegetable oil and wipe off the excess with a cloth or tissue.
